Check out this recent interview with Steve Hansen for the Happiness Archive! We delve into my life as a headshot photographer:

I grew up in New York City, putting on shows for my parents and their friends. Both of my parents were professional musicians and my father in particular loved musical theater, so a few times a year he’d take us to see Broadway shows. He taught me how to wait at the stage door afterwards to catch a glimpse of the stars, like Yul Brenner, Angela Lansbury and Cher. So, it’s no big surprise that I wanted to be an actress when I grew up. When I started developing other interests and eventually became a photographer instead, I naturally gravitated towards doing actor headshots. I love actors and performers. I just get them.
While I pride myself on my technical skills in photography, my headshots are not just about great lighting. More than anything I care about authenticity and connection in my photographs. I want the viewer to be drawn in by compelling and meaningful eye contact. I think that’s what makes my headshots stand out to casting directors.
A few other things you might want to know about me: I live in Brooklyn and adore dogs (all animals actually). I’m a big reader, practice yoga sometimes, and try to meditate. When I’m not shooting headshots, I’m cooking up some photojournalism project or shooting landscapes with my old Pentax 67.
I hope you enjoy looking at my work and please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions!
